Care of Older People - Health Forum

Date Released: 18 May 2006

“The crisis in the health service continues to be a cause of concern to Union members and their families, but it is of particular concern to older and retired members,” said SIPTU General Secretary, Joe O’Flynn.

“Despite the best efforts of health care workers to provide a professional service - against a backdrop of insufficient resources - the crisis in the health service remains unabated,” he said.

For this reason SIPTU is holding a half-day health forum specifically aimed at addressing some of the concerns of older people.  It is expected that over 100 retired members will attend.

The Forum will take place in the Gresham Hotel, O’Connell Street, Dublin, on Friday May 26, from 9.30am to 1.30pm

At 10.00am, An Tanaiste and Minister for Health, Mary Harney TD will address the Forum.
At 10.30am, Ita Mangan BL will officially launch SIPTU’s report ‘Care of Older People.'

At 11.45am, Aidan Browne, National Director for Private Community and Continuing Care at the HSE will give an overview of the care of older people in the health service.

SIPTU General Secretary, Joe O’Flynn,  will formally open and close the Forum.

Accredited members of the media are invited to attend.   Finger food will be served following the close of the Forum.
